The title 'Netaji' was given to Subhas Chandra Bose by German and Indian officials at the Special Bureau of India in Berlin.

Subhash Chandra Bose was an Indian revolutionary who believed in violent resistance to British rule. He joined the Indian National Army in 1943. His most famous declarations were 'Tum Mujhe Khoon do main tumhe Azadi doonga' (Give me blood, I shall give you freedom).

The title description of Netaji, "The Forgotten Hero", was chosen by director Shyam Benegal because he felt that outside the state of Bengal, nobody knew who Bose really was and/or what he did for India's independence.

His life is a great example of leadership from which modern Indian leaders can learn many lessons. He was an enthusiastic, disciplined, selfless, and inspiring leader with strong confidence in his own capability and a clear goal of independent India.

Years of nonviolent resistance to British rule, led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU, eventually resulted in Indian independence in 1947. Large-scale communal violence took place before and after the subcontinent partition into two separate states - India and Pakistan.

Bose authored the book 'The Indian Struggle' which covers the Indian independence movement from 1920 to 1942. The book was banned by the British government. He coined the term 'Jai Hind'. His charisma and powerful personality inspired many people into the freedom struggle and continue to inspire Indians.

Off Madagascar, he was transferred to a Japanese submarine from which he disembarked in Japanese-held Sumatra in May 1943. With Japanese support, Bose revamped the Indian National Army (INA), which comprised Indian prisoners of war of the Indian Army who had been captured by the Japanese in the Battle of Singapore.

The Indian freedom struggle and the war of independence led by Subhas Chandra Bose profoundly impacted those countries. Netaji's status establishes him as the "hero of freedom" globally.

In 1941, Bose managed to leave India through Afghanistan. In 1943, Bose was in Japan and supported the Prime Minister's efforts to reconstitute the India National Army (INA) and set up the 'Azad Hind' or Free India provisional government.
