08 Dec 2023: Widow Pension of Ex Servicemen: State-wise data of Widows, There are about 2.6 million ex-servicemen, and 6,98,252 widows, including war widows, i.e., a combined total of 3.2 million, of whom about 86 percent are widows, Junior Commissioned Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and other ranks, and about 14 percent are officers.

The ex-servicemen widows are entitled to a family pension, which is revised under OROP every five years. The family pension is also linked with dearness relief which is revised every six months.
The government reviews the various welfare measures extended to war widows/families in the Armed Forces from time to time. A list of welfare measures that has been revised recently is as follows:

War widows/families are provided employment through schemes of employment through compassionate appointment. Guidelines for compassionate appointments have been issued by DoP&T. Under the scheme, wards/dependents of war widows/martyrs are also considered along with others as per extant rules. Compassionate appointments have been granted to 32 widows/family members of deceased defense personnel during the year 2022.
