An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 on the Richter scale jolted Assam's

17 Jan 2024: An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 on the Richter scale jolted Assam's Darrang district on Wednesday morning at 7:54 am local time. The epicenter of the quake was reported to be 48 km from Cherrapunji in Meghalaya at a depth of 16 km. The National Center for Seismology confirmed the occurrence of the earthquake

What is the Richter scale and how is it used to measure earthquakes

The Richter scale is a widely used quantitative measure of an earthquake's magnitude, developed by Charles F. Richter in 1935. It measures the amplitude (height) of the largest recorded wave at a specific distance from the seismic source. The scale is logarithmic, meaning that each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in amplitude and approximately 31.6 times more energy release.

However, the Richter scale has been largely replaced by the Moment Magnitude Scale (MMS), which is based on the seismic moment of the earthquake and is applicable globally. The magnitude of an earthquake is determined using information gathered by a seismograph, and it is important to note that earthquake magnitude is different from earthquake intensity, which describes the severity of an earthquake's effects on the Earth's surface, humans, and buildings at different locations in the area of the epicenter.
